Covering Christchurch, Highcliffe, Burton, Bransgore, Hurn, Mudeford & Walkford
Cheese and Alfie’s, what a fantastic spot for a restaurant; the cobbled street leading up to the backdrop of the Priory and strolling distance from the beautiful relic of Norman Hall and Convent Walk. This little gem is situated in the historic quarter of Christchurch. The eye catching sign above the door and quirky name beckons you to find out more.
The décor is bright and funky with unusual artwork and quirky pieces splashed around the place. Colours of turquoise and bright pink make a refreshing combination and are followed throughout the restaurant right through to the staffs’ uniforms, cheeky graphics and slogans on the walls. There are comfy areas with a sofa and window seat to while away the hours with one of the ‘free’ books, there’s even a selection of small toys to keep the kids amused while you’re eating. The open plan kitchen creates an exciting vibe and it’s wonderful to see what goes on behind the scenes - it was a positive feeling throughout the evening. There is fresh produce on display and is used to stock the kitchen when needed and a variety of freshly homemade cakes.
Having previously sampled the daytime menu, this time we decided to give the evening a try, and the atmosphere was set straight away as we were greeted by a member of staff from the open plan kitchen, which immediately made us feel part of the restaurant and the start of what turned out to be a fabulous evening. The restaurant allows you to eat at your own pace, some diners, who seemed to be on a schedule, got through their meal quickly and smoothly, and others dined slower and a steady stream of tasty dishes came at a perfect pace. The staff seemed to be able to gauge what was needed and when for every individual.
The ‘Supper Club’ menu covers all needs; there is plenty of choice of fish, meat, vegetarian and low fat / fat free dishes both starter and main courses, there is a section for the pasta lovers too. There are some well known favourites, but with a bit of a twist such as ‘the burger’ that is served on a small butchers block that towers high, and game sausages with chocolate jus. One of the main contenders on the menu is ‘the pan’, which is a full English breakfast with the famous ‘Boston Beans’ which came served in a cast iron frying pan - fabulous. It’s on both the daytime and evening menus and when we spoke to Mike, the owner about ‘the pan’ he commented “who say’s breakfast has to be eaten in the morning. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so it should be available all day!”
The portions at Cheese and Alfies are hearty, to say the least, and although we didn’t think we would be able to manage a dessert, the choice of white chocolate cheesecake, treacle tart and fruit crumble was too tempting. In the end we opted to share a ‘brownie-boker-glory; a mountain of chocolate ice cream, chocolate brownie, chocolate sauce and fruit served in a tall sundae glass – incredible!
Cheese and Alfies has certainly covered all the bases with breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner and seems set to establish itself among Christchurch’s great places to eat, can’t wait to go back.
